A Grand Day Out

Four Candles
Thursday Opens : 08:00 | Closes : 00:00

Four Candles

add to fav
This pub takes its name from the sketch written by Ronnie Barker for the television show The Two Ronnies, in which he starred alongside Ronnie Corbett. In the sketch, Barker walks into a hardware store and asks for 'four candles'. Corbett gives him the candles, but Barker had really wanted 'fork handles' - “andles for forksâ€.

The nearby history faculty of Oxford University was built in 1881 as the City's High School for Boys, occupying this impressive building for more than 80 years. The school's former pupils include the actor, writer and comedian Ronnie Barker (1929-2005).

Old Bookbinders

Old Bookbinders

add to fav
Oxford's "Best kept Secret" since 1869.

The Old Bookbinders is a family-run pub sitting deep in the heart of Jericho shying away from the hustle and bustle of Walton Street. Just a short walk away from the city centre, the historic suburb of Jericho is one of Oxford’s finest with a strong community feel and a reputation for its quirky nature. One of Jericho’s few remaining pubs The Bookies manages to hold on to the charm and quirkiness of public houses from yesteryear.

Re-opening its doors in 2011, the Sadones family tried to prove it was possible to serve quality food in a traditional pub atmosphere; wanting to avoid jumping on the “gastro-pub” bandwagon. We serve food six days a week, keeping it simple in style and honest in price.

We are dog, child and student friendly (as long as they’re well behaved) so bring the whole family and come say “Hello!” to Michel, Josh, Jacky and Belle; Jericho’s newest residents.

Rickety Press

Located just a short walk from Oxford city centre, on a quiet side road in the heart of historic Jericho, the Rickety Press is both a traditional local pub and an acclaimed restaurant. You’ll find a warm friendly welcome at the Rickety whether you’re joining us simply to relax in our comfortable bar, soak up the atmosphere and enjoy real ales and handpicked wines - or you want to experience superb gourmet food served in our spacious restaurant.

Too often, when the words pub and restaurant are found together, the reality is something that is neither; genuine exceptions to this rule are few, but thankfully for residents of Oxford and visitors to the city, the Rickety is most definitely one of them!

Everyone in our young, knowledgeable team cares passionately about each dish we prepare, and every drink we serve. In fact, there’s only one thing we love as much as the excitement of creating great food and drink, and that’s sharing it with our customers. Our approach is simple; we are committed to delivering the best food and drink experience - and equally determined to do away with the stuffiness and formality that can sometimes go hand in hand with fare of this quality. In short, we believe the relaxed ambience of the Rickety makes everything taste even better!

Royal Blenheim

I often hear people say “I’m thinking of retiring and running a pub”. Well let me tell all the people living in dream land, it’s not as easy as it looks!

When we decided to open the pub in Oxford to be the White Horse Brewery ‘tap’, the hardest part of the process was finding someone that understood what we wanted to achieve.

We have a real passion for cask ale, which you can see after the pub made it into the Good Beer Guide after only a year and also being voted one of top four cask ale pubs in Oxford!

Duncan runs a great kitchen sourcing as many ingredients as he can get from local producers in the Covered Market. Some of the great homemade food available on the menu at the Royal Blenheim includes wonderful chilli and freshly batted fish to name but a few. And that is without mentioning the number of vegetarian and vegan choices available, so there really is something for everyone!

But don’t just take my word for it, come on down and meet the team
